American Cruise Lines launched its fifth and newest cruise ship, Independence, on Nov. 4. Currently under construction at Chesapeake Shipbuilding Corp. in Salisbury, Md., the Independence will join the fleet in August 2009 and will operate year-round with more extensive sea-going itineraries including New England, the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Florida Keys including Dry Tortugas. The new ship will accommodate 104 passengers, and 80 percent of the staterooms and suites will have private balconies.
It will have active wing stabilizers, several lounges and exercise equipment. Every stateroom will have large opening picture windows in addition to satellite TV, DVD players and Internet access. The staterooms will range in size from 264 square feet to 350 square feet and have suites up to 520 square feet. Dining will be open-seating. The Independence will be fully stabilized by Rolls-Royce Marine active wing stabilizer units and be powered by Caterpillar diesel engines for propulsion and generators and meet the newest and most stringent safety and environmental standards.
